Inclusion is a JPL core value, and fostering a diverse and equitable work environment is mission-critical for the Lab. Just as we are fearless in doing the impossible, we must also be fearless in taking action, respecting our employees' experiences, creating an inclusive environment where differing perspectives are valued and respected, and being a catalyst for positive change.
We believe in having a workforce representative of the U.S. labor force, and pushing ourselves to seek out connections across difference to build broad networks. We identify talent, partners, and subcontractors from as broad a pool of options as possible.
We leverage data and research-backed solutions to increase the equity of our systems and processes. We ensure that every employee has what they need to reach their full potential, and we continuously evaluate and examine our policies and practices to ensure that unconscious bias is not inadvertently embedded.
Employees with disabilities are seen as valued members of the JPL community, and their voices are included in accessibility-related decisions. Disabled colleagues have the same opportunities and access to tools as a person without a disability.
Trust and accountability
We cultivate a culture of mutual trust and accountability between our employees and our leaders through transparency in our policies, our decision-making, and in our demographic data. We ensure that our employees trust our systems to report when issues arise, and do not fear reprisal.
JPL is located on the traditional lands of the Tongva peoples, specifically the Hahamog’na band. These lands, Tovaangar, or the Los Angeles basin, continue to be the homelands of the Kizh (Pronounced Keech) Gabrieleño Band Of Mission Indians and other Indigenous peoples of the region. With this acknowledgment, we affirm and preserve Indigenous sovereignty, and pay our respects to all our relations, past, present, and future. We recognize our past and commit to creating a future where Indigenous voices are honored.
JPL Office of Inclusion
We're dedicated to developing data-driven solutions that support a safe, inclusive, and exciting workplace where all can thrive. Our focus is on supporting the wellness of JPL systems and culture so individuals can contribute to team efforts at their greatest capacity. We document our research, data, and solutions to share with industry so everyone benefits from JPL’s leadership in supporting a culture of inclusion.
Communities of Inclusion
JPL is home to several communities that support inclusion at the Lab—Employee Resource Groups, Affinity Groups, working groups, org-specific DEIA committees, and so on. Collectively, we refer to these organizations as "Communities of Inclusion." The Office of Inclusion advocates for the Employee Resource Groups by ensuring the support of JPL and its leadership and providing resources to support their constituent populations.
Chief Inclusion Officer, Neela Rajendra
JPL’s first Chief Inclusion Officer combines her experiences in higher education and the corporate sector together with her expertise in designing high-impact methods to create scalable interventions to advance DEI across JPL.
Employee Resource Groups
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led groups that aim to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace while providing visibility and representation across the Lab. ERGs at JPL are based on communities of underrepresented identities or experiences relevant to the Lab and its mission, business objectives, and workforce.
Affinity Groups (AGs) are communities of practice that don't specifically focus on historically excluded populations.
Interest Groups & Clubs
While not strictly under the umbrella of the Office of Inclusion, interest groups and clubs are a great way to feel included at JPL. Like ERGs and AGs, clubs and interest groups are open for anyone at JPL to join.
We have big aspirations, driven by our values
We are courageous explorers, driven by our conviction to take informed risks and expand the edge of possibility. We build and manage complex missions designed to tackle the most challenging scientific questions and address global challenges. We are motivated by building first-of-a-kind systems and by knowing that out discoveries will advance knowledge and drive positive change.
We create a collaborative culture where our teams, colleagues, and partners feel valued and empowered to innovate. We appreciate excellence, expertise, and experience across all disciplines. We embrace difference with respect and curiosity. We create environments where teams can achieve things not thought possible. We take pride in the breadth of our reach, engagement, and impact.
We operate with integrity and the highest professional standards. We do the right thing. We honor our commitments. We work to advance our relationships. We share information and expertise with each other, with partners, and with the world. We work together toward ambitious common goals and outcomes.
You too can be part of one-of-a-kind science, research and technology that help our fellow humans, here on Earth and one day out there in space. We also offer careers in the business of space, including administration, communications, human resources, finance and more.
In partnership with the Society for Women Engineers (SWE) and iRelaunch, JPL’s Project Discovery is a returnship program that focuses on bringing professionals back to the workforce after an extended absence.
Our JPL recruiters and technical representatives participate in many career fairs and conferences throughout the year. They do interviews, talks, and on-the-spot offers, so if you’re interested in a career at JPL, don’t miss out, and register today for an event near you.
We're more than our missions, science and innovations. We are mothers, fathers, first-generation immigrants, daughter, grandsons, cat owners, musicians, and more. Get to know JPL employees and be inspired to join them
